General Systems
The Abbotsford water system consists of 13 wells, 2 water treatment plants and 2 water towers, serving 900 customers.

6 wells range from 18-20 gallons per minute
2 wells range from 32-35 gallons per minute
2 wells range from 55-60 gallons per minute
2 wells range from 175-225 gallons per minute
1 well is 300 gallons per minute

The two water treatment plants yield approximately 350,000 gallons per day.

The ground storage reservoir, which was built in 1903, has a capacity of 188,000 gallons and the elevated tank, which was built in 1997, has a capacity of 400,000 gallons.

The Abbotsford 1 M.G.D. Water Treatment Plant No. 1 was completed in 1997. The 1 million gallon per day, 700 gallons per minute plant utilizes ozone to provide primary disinfection for raw water from the City’s well collection system. Chlorine is injected into the treated water for residual disinfectant.

The Abbotsford Water System relies heavily on the original large diameter dug wells. However, the dug wells by their very nature of being large infiltration galleries have led to bacteriological usage water problems.

The City studied replacement of the dug wells with drilled wells. An abundance of low yielding granite bedrock with clay overburden material resulted in the City selecting ozone treatment of the water from the dug wells.

A 200 gram/hour negative pressure ozone system provides 3 log removal of giardia disinfection level. Using turbine diffusers to inject the ozone/air gas stream into the raw water also provides for trichloroethylene and benzene removal.
